Drawing: Nicaise

I mentioned a while back that I reused the concept for this sketch for a ProMarker drawing. Well, this was the drawing I was refering to.

I had just recently purchased som new ProMarkers, among them “ginger” so I could finally do red hair properly. I’m so happy with how it turned out. The colours I used for the hair was aforementioned “ginger”, and then “raw sienna” and “burnt sienna” for shadowing. It turned out really nicely.

The perspective’s a bit off, as I attempted a frog perspective and didn’t quite get it to work out. I’m happy with the colours and shadowing, but really need to practice doing portraits from some odd angles.

This is sort of how I imagine Nicaise from the book trilogy Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat. He’s a vicious, pretty thing and one of my favourite characters.

Sketch: Nicaise

Joining up with Urban Sketchers got me out of my rut and now I been drawing slightly more prolifically than I have been since 2015 and before I got ill. While I was down with a cold, I decided to do a quick portrait.

I originally wanted to do it in ink pen, but as I rummaged through my art gear I realised that I had used them all up and never bothered to replace them. Hmph. So I had to make do with a black ProMarker, which made the lines so much thicker than they were in my imagination.

At the time, I wasn’t too happy with it but I rather like it today. There’s something about his expression that’s really sweet and the shadowing’s quite nice. At the time I had been reading C. S. Pacats final book in the Captive Prince-trilogy and one character that was on my mind wasn’t even in the book, but I still wanted to draw him after finishing the book. So this is kind of a sketch of Nicaise. Kind of.

I later revisited this concept and did a drawing in colour using ProMarker.
